Craig Burgess wins the Essex Championship Singles Final

It was a thrilling final to end the season with. The Final was between Craig Burgess from East Hanningfield a previous 4 times winner of this competition and Derek Coates of Sanguine.

Derek got off to a great start taking a 6-0 lead, Craig fought his way back going into the last end leading 10 shots to 9. Derek had a great chance with his last bowl to drag the Jack back to take 1 shot which would have levelled the game and therefore and extra end would have been played, however Derek narrowly missed the shot and Craig won by 12 shots to 9, giving Craig his 5th Essex Championship Trophy.

Well done to both players in reaching the final and now go on to Derbyshire next week  with 3rd and 4th place players representing Essex at the National Singles Championship.

Congratulation Craig

Essex County Registrations

Dear Members

Essex have received a number of enquiries in respect of registration cards.   The current situation is that ESMBA will not be issuing registration cards until they have received all registrations across the counties.

In previous years membership records passed to the ESMBA Administrator were scant and submitted in various mediums.  The ESMBA administrator will now provide to each county membership secretary  an electronic format which will replace current system in place.

New registration cards will be issued as soon as all the information has been received and collated by ESMBA. Counties have been asked to bear with them whilst this task is being undertaken.

Essex Umpires Association Disbanded - Volunteer Needed

It is with regret that the long running Essex Umpires association agreed to disband at their AGM. It is  understood this was mainly due to insufficient umpires within Essex and the lack of  interest in running and co-ordinating the association.

Albeit the association has disbanded Essex County require a volunteer/volunteers to be a point of contact to coordinate our remaining umpires and competitions . This would involve liaising with the ICC selectors and arranging  umpires for 3 home games for Inter County Championships, Liaise with Competition Secretary to arrange umpires for the National/Essex Championships, and arrange any umpires for local competitions.

All other questions relating to umpires, people should  be directed to the  National Umpires director

County Role -Up

It was good to see so many people at the county role-up last Sunday at Stonyhill,  I hope you all had a good time.

Barry made an introduction of three new players joining Essex this year , Mat  and Debbie who moved from Kent and are now playing for Springhouse this year  and Fred Gudgin  who moved to Devon some 8 years ago and is now moving back to Essex in due course and is playing for East Hanningfield.  Essex welcomes you with open arms and wish you all the best  in your new clubs and county.

This year there are four new selectors,   Paul Bax, Shirley Walker, Paul Cairns and Jack Shepherd. Throughout the day the selectors eagerly watched potential county bowlers,  They saw some excellent bowling  that would give the selectors a headache in picking the county teams.

On the day, teams of triples and fours were put together over 4 sessions with a 10 minute break between each session with an hour's lunch break after the second session. The floor  to the rinks has been re-levelled  and now makes home matches  less advantages.  However the mats played more or less true either side and were a pleasure to play.  After the bowling finished the Selectors including the Chairman had a selectors meeting to discuss the teams for the up and coming county matches.

Over the next week or so the selectors will be in contact with those who had been chosen to play in the first county match,  However I will stress to those who have not been selected this time around  the selectors only take one game at a time, therefore you could be selected in the next game or one of the other county games during the season.  If you're not selected to play don`t give up there is always the following year.

I personally do not envy the selectors role, It's a tough Job with criticism,  When Selecting players it's not just about selecting a group of players. below are just few examples a selector needs to think about.

·          you need think about the opposition

·      They also need to think about the best position that you suit the team ( some players may think there skips but put them with another set of players they may be best suited as three or one)

·        A skip and three also needs to understand the position of bowls on the Mat and the best delivery (some are more suited to this role better than others)

·       A skip also needs to understand their team players bowls, i.e do they turn a lot,  they also need to know whether a player is better on one hand than another, is the player right or left handed, you might ask what's this got to do with it, It makes a big difference, A left handed player can play a completely different line than a right handed player playing on his backhand and visa versa

There are considerable more strategies one could go into,  but the one important understanding is that It does not matter what position you play, each position has it unique place and each position is as important as the next position.

Good Luck to those players in first games

Dear Bowlers

Letters should now be with all County Secretaries for information regards County Bowling Season 2014-15  - Please See County Page / County Form ICC

If  you want to play for your county but you are not sure,  why not have a go, There are many players in Essex who under estimate there capabilities.   There have been times when I have spoken to bowlers who think they are not good enough to play for their County. I can assure you many players do have that ability but lack the confidence.  Age is immaterial in this game (from the young right through to those of the older generation) everyone has that ability.

So why not go to County Page / County Form ICC and follow the instructions  or click on the link -  County ICC form

ECSMBA Web Page

Dear Members

You are probably aware that over these past weeks I have been updating the ECSMBA web page. There is still a considerable amount to do so I would ask you all to bear with us during this ongoing process. However I would be grateful that if you spot anything that may be incorrect or needs re-updating  or even help us with suggestions on making the web page better I would be only too glad to receive the feedback.   There a few items in the pipeline we are reviewing i.e. setting up a Facebook page (linking it to the ECSMBA web page), introducing on the ECSMBA  web page a place where people can advertise their new/old bowls equipment,  we are also looking at the feasibility of a quarterly newsletter, all this takes time but if you do wish to contact me I am available on the Publicity's email address. publicity@ecsmba.com

Kind regards

Presentation Night 2014

Dear Members

The presentation night was great success with around 180 people attending on the night, a great job was completed by Barry Hedges (County Chairman) and Tony Elham (League Chairman) in making the announcements with the County President Sammy Lambert and League Fixture Secretary Tony Hayes in presenting the prizes.

On the night a special raffle was held in aid of Prostate Cancer, Mitchell Young and Adam Sultana donated their  Holiday Pairs voucher worth £75 each. The raffle  raised a massive £154. A big thank you must go out  Mitchell & Adam for raising so much money for such a good cause.

Photographs of the presentation night have now been uploaded,  two new pages has been added "Presentation 2014" and "League Gallery" You will find the league gallery under South Essex League. Congratulations to all the winners and runners-up the photographs will help to remember past achievements.

A thank you should also go out to all those people who helped behind the scenes either before or on the night.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION - DIARY CHANGES

Dear members please note for your diary  that the Essex Championship (Nationals) singles has been re-scheduled to the 4th January 2015 and the Essex Championship (Nationals) Under 18s and Holiday Pairs has been rescheduled for the 1st February 2015.

The executive committee agreed not to run the singles event on 21st December 2014 due to it being impractical to run the event the last weekend prior to Christmas as it was believed that numbers could be low.

The reason the 4th January has been chosen for the singles,  Essex are restricted on available dates throughout the season.   Adult Essex Championship(Nationals) events are not allowed to be run on England Seminar weekends (1st February)  therefore the Under 18s and Holiday pairs has been moved to the 1st February 2015 and the Singles event to 4th January.
